Dr. K. K. Wong eulogizes the profile of Prof. Armando Rocha Trindade

We are very grateful to have the support and help from Prof. Armardo Rocha Trindade for all these years, which enable us to maintain a very high level of academic quality. In order to present our heartfelt gratitude and respect, we specially arrange this ceremony to award the Academic Council Chairman Emeritus of AIOU to Prof. Armando Rocha Trindade.
Now let me give you the profile of Prof. Armando Rocha Trindade and let you have a thorough understanding and knowledge about Prof. Armando Rocha Trindade.
Prof. Armando Rocha Trindade was born in Lisbon in 1937. In 1970 he got the Electrotecnic Engineer Degree in Portugal and Doctor of Physics (Faculty of Sciences, University of Paris) from France. In 1974, he became Professor of Instituto Superior Tecnico and also took the post of Head of the Physics Department in the same Institute. In 1976, he became the Director of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education of Portugal. In 1981, he took the post of Chairman of the Scientific-Pedagogic for Portuguese University Studies Committee. In 1987, he became the President of the Portuguese Institute of Distance Learning. In 1988, he acted as President of the Institute of Educational Technology; this Institute later became the Open University of Portugal (UA). Later he served as Rector of UA until 1998. In early 90’s, he also involved himself in the higher education of Macau and contributed a lot towards the transformation of the University of East Asia into the present AIOU. He became the first Chairman of our Academic Council. He was also Consultant on Scientific and Technological Affairs to the Institute of Defense of Portugal. He has joined the Portuguese delegation to the DELTA educational project in Europe. Moreover, he was Founder Member of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities and also the Secretary-General for the Association. He was awarded the French decorations of Officer of Ordre des Palmes Academiques and Officer of Ordre National du Merite. He is the author of more than one hundred published works, in different languages.
Prof. Armando Rocha Trindade speaks several European languages fluently (English, French, Spanish, besides Portuguese) having a fair communicational competence in (Latin-inspired) Italian. He has traveled extensively: visiting distance education systems and organisations and contacting their leading specialists, in order to evaluate the more recent achievements and trends in this field.
He was the Scientific Program Chair of the “European Conference on ODL Networking for Quality Learning?under the auspices of the European ODL Liaison Committee, an association of a dozen European Networks dealing with human resources development.
Prof. Armando Rocha Trindade was awarded the degree of “Doctor Honoris Causa (Humane Letters) ?by the State University of New York in 1997. He was also awarded the same honorary degree by the British Open University in 1998. He was nominated “Honorary Professor?of the University of External Studies of Moscow (Russia) and “Honorary Advisor and Guest Professor?of the Shanghai Television University (P. R. China).
He won the Robert de Kieffer International Fellowship Award, of the “Association of Educational Communication Technologies?(USA) and was nominated Lifetime Member of the “European Distance Education Network? in 1999. At the end of his term as President of the “International Council for Open and Distance Education?in 1999 he was given the title of President Emeritus of the ICDE, with active duties in this quality.
