Speech of Prof. Zhuang Shanyu

Distinguished Guests,
I thank you for your presence and your support. It is with enormous pride and deep humility that I am installed today as the Rector Emeritus of the Asia International Open University (Macau). I pledge to do everything in my power to be worthy of the trust you have placed in me. I deeply believe that the Honour should always go to the faculty, staff and students of Asia International Open University (Macau), which keep striving for excellence in these years. I also deeply believe that the Honour acts as a catalyst for my teaching career. Under no circumstances shall I leave the lecture hall which is the stage of my lifetime.
Today is a special day for us. Renowned Prof. Armando Rocha Trindade will be awarded the Honour of Chairman Emeritus of the Academic Council of Asia International Open University (Macau). The University was formed by the cooperation of the former East Asia Open Institute and the Universidade Aberta (Open University of Portugal) in 1992. And thereafter Council meetings were organized once a year in Macau and Lisbon alternatively. This year the Rector Prof. Carlos Reis, the Founding Rector Prof. Rocha Trindade, and the representative in Macau Dra. Regina Paz are attending the meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to express my warmest welcome to them.
It has been my greatest privilege to work at the University for the last eight years. I had received tons of help, support and regards from various people and institutions. I would like to thank you all for the wonderful time you have given to me. In brief, I would like to express my gratitude through a little poem:
Hair turned grey
Years written on my face
Old dog still plays new tricks, and
Will find its way
Time flies
People pass by
Only passion remains, and
Friendship of Macau
Will never die
This year is a special year for the Chinese people. China will be hosting the Olympic Games in August and celebrating her thirtieth anniversary of Reform in December. As Chinese, we shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started, and know the place for the first time.
All the best to Macau, to the Asia International Open University, and, to you all.
Thank you.
